June Meeting Recap We thank Raytheon and Airport Technology Park for hosting our monthly luncheon. Thornberry’s Delicatessen provided nice box lunches for our meeting. Barbara Nichols, IABA President, welcomed everyone to the meeting. She also reported that we had 5 applicants this year for our annual scholarship. The $500 scholarship was awarded to Derek Higdon from DeSales High School. The scholarship was presented at the school’s Honors’ Day program Friday, May 13, 2011. SGT Page of the Metro Police 4th Division reported that they had recently participated in the Americana Festival on June 4. They also wanted us to know about the National Night Out on August 4. There will be a helicopter for the children to sit in. The Horse Patrol and Canine units will also be represented. A residential burglary detail was begun on June 1 and overall crime in the division is down 13.2%. Four new recruits were assigned to the division. Vicki Welch, Metro Councilwoman for the 13th District reported for the 3rd Division. AC units, as well as patio furniture, mowers, power tools, and other items found in unlocked autos remain the most popular stolen items. Barbara then introduced our special guest, Imani Beverly, Assistant Branch Manager for the Iroquois Branch of the Public Library. She shared that this she serves in the “International Library” due to the big collection of ESL and Bilingual resources. They have plenty of DIY information that can be borrowed. The Job Center is very popular and can be used without a library card. They have a meeting room available for sharing with the community. They have many database resources available for businesses to use—census data, information on the types of businesses in certain areas, and local and national business news. Other announcements: 1) Ray Manley, Dan Johnson’s Administrative Assistant, reported that Phase 1 of the Crittenden Drive Plan is set to begin next week. This is the overpass that will connect Crittenden Drive and Strawberry Lane near Rochester Drive. Anticipated completion time is the end of the year. Other phases are in the process of approval. 2) Vicki Welch announced the first public meeting of the New Cut Road/Taylor Boulevard Corridor Planning Committee will be held on July 23 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This corridor runs from Interstate 264 to Interstate 265. 3) South Louisville Community Ministries has a new director, James Laemmle. 4) It was also mentioned that our meetings can be a great place to mention employee needs you have. Twenty-one were in attendance at the meeting. Our next meeting will be in the Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Conference Room off the ground floor parking lot on July 21. The luncheon will begin at 11:30. Mission Statement The mission of the IABA is to support, educate and represent through a unified voice the Iroquois-area businesses in an effort to enhance the community.
